Combine an eccentric theme, a miscellany of artists against the backdrop of the Isle of Wight's faded seaside glamour and you have an exhibition that's set to be the must-sea surreal show of the summer.
The Hunting of the Snark – 12 Artists Imagine The Impossible is a madly creative exhibition featuring music, photography, puppetry, painting and flags. Twelve artists have been invited to respond Lewis Carroll's epic nonsense poem The Hunting of the Snark (THOTS) which he wrote whilst on holiday in Sandown. It has been perfectly described as 'an impossible voyage by an improbable crew to find an inconceivable creature.' It's filled with wonderful imagery, bizarre situations and surrealistic twists inspiring many including:Tove Jansson, Douglas Adams, Robertson Davies,Gerald Durrell, Mike Batt and the cult Japanese cartoons series Ghost Hounds. Now it continues to inspire a new generation. 'This is a great opportunity to rework a classic for the 21st century' says co-founder Lauren Fry
Boojum&Snark is a 12- month creative collaboration aimed at bringing cultural experiences to areas of economic and social deprivation on the Isle of Wight. 'Boojum aims to revive our seaside towns with a culture injection,' says co-founder Tracy Mikich.
Artists featured: Birgitte Haahr Lund, Ergo Phizmiz, Garry Whitehead, Michael Forrest, Nicola Killeen, Elaine McCracken, Laura Meredith, Aaron Fletcher, Julian Winslow, Chris Jenkins, Jo Hummel-Newell.
